The year is 1870, while the wounds of the Civil War are still fresh in the land's heart, the young nation is on an upward rise as a breakthrough in steam technology has allowed for amazing innovations in both mundane and commercial life for citizens, but some whisper about rumors of its origins, and the dark bargains made to achieve progress. With advances in transport and trade the American Railroad network has grown to nearly all corners of the country.

However this leap forward has left some behind, mainly the equine industry, so in an effort to keep afloat Stable Businessmen turned to entertainment rather than trade, enacting a cross-country race in honor of a bygone era: The Postman's Pride Grand Prix. A race spanning multiple weeks in several locations across the nation, all are invited to see the ten competitors and their steeds in a grueling endurance run across various terrain through harsh weathers, and see who will come out on top and claim the Grand Prize of $1000.

We begin our tale with four wanderers entreatied by a sponsor of the race with a mysterious proposition, heading into town to meet each other and their benefactor...
